The Ebony Tree Revealed Many Men of Note, Some of Whom Are Listed Here.

For many years, our children have graduated from high school with only a diploma in their hands. Those who are not able to go to college, often found an alley ready and waiting. Many of them became enmeshed in schemes to exploit their own people.

In spite of the lack of educational opportunities, East St. Louis has produced many outstanding men who could be considered a credit to any community in the world. Since many of our young men have emerged as teachers, principals, scientists, engineers, lawyers and doctors, we are proud to call this section: "Men of Distinction."

HORACE ADAMS

Horace Adams, a family man and father of seven child-ren, was a pioneer in the politics, education and civil rights of East St. Louis. He was one of the leading promoters of the Paramount Democrat Club, and set in motion a program that was so convincing many Negroes changed their allegiances from the Republican to the Democratic party.

Backed by thousands of younger men of St. Clair County, he secured help and patronage jobs fpr his race and began to reduce the power of the white leadership which had firm control prior to his time. Adams piloted his way through perils and vicissitudes, which are common to all such ad-venturers, to the fearless position of Negro leader and President of the Paramount Democrat Club of St. Clair County.
